The Schroder Foundation Youth Bursary Scheme 26 September 2008 THE SCHRODER FOUNDATIONYOUTH BURSARY SCHEME 2009The Schroder Foundation would like to invite anyone aged between 8 and 18 to apply for a bursary to assist travel to the mainland in pursuit of an absorbing interest during 2009. The bursary would be for up to a maximum of £500 to be spent on travel, accommodation and needful extras to pursue a particular interest, which might be academic, artistic, musical or athletic. The point of this bursary is to offer young islanders the same opportunities as others have on the mainland by assisting with the additional costs which our island location brings. All applications should be made by the young people themselves (the more imaginative the better!) and should identify the expenses which need assistance, why the interest is of over-riding importance to the applicant, and what the applicant hopes to achieve through the bursary. Applicants should also explain why their proposed activity would not be possible without the help of the Schroder Foundation.Entries should be sent to The Schroder Foundation, 33 Gutter Lane, London, EC2V 8AS by 31st October 2008. A maximum of five bursaries will be awarded and all awards must be used within nine months of receipt. This scheme is intended to support the pursuit of individual interests only and therefore no awards will be made towards group travel or costs.AVONVOGIE ABATTOIR OPEN FOR BUSINESS 25 September 2008 After 2 years in the planning and building, endless heartache over red tape and documentation and the never ending question "When will the abattoir be open?", the Avonvogie Abattoir finally had its trial slaughter on the 23rd September 2008. In attendance were Chloë Randall - Dunlossit Estate Manager, Jack Shewring - Project Manager and principal designer, Steve Marshall - LS Sleightholmes Ltd, Beth Newman - Officiating Vet and Meat Hygiene Inspector, John Codd - Slaughterman, Nick Bowman - Assistant Slaughterman and Ian Campbell - Electrician. All went according to plan and the end result was one Aberdeen Angus bull, one Highland bull, two pigs and six lambs hanging in the chill. One of these lambs was a Suffolk lamb auctioned by Isobelle McMillan of Eorrabus in aid of Islay and Jura Sick Children's Fund. The lucky bidder was Bruichladdich Distillery. For further details please have a look at our Avonvogie Abattoir website, www.avonvogie.co.uk. There are a few pictures there of the trial slaughter (nothing too graphic but some people may feel a little uncomfortable viewing them).
